An Interview with BBC Asian Network Radio Producer Amnpreet Kaur

Ampreet Kaur is a 28 years old born and raised in the small city of Bradford in Yorkshire. She is from a traditional Indian background with keen interest in the issues affecting and celebrating British Asians. During her first degree in film and television production at the University of Bradford, she started working for local radio station Sunrise Radio. Although, it was initially a work experience, through her enthusiasm, she began presenting her own shows such as the chart show and drive time for the station. However, she soon settled and became the Breakfast show presenter during weekdays.

After completing her Masters in Media Studies from the same university in 2010, she continued working at the radio station part time and became a full time mortgage advisor. She slowly started progressing in real estate, gained professional experience and making huge salary but she was not inspired creatively and personally due to her passion for the media industry.

Amnpreet dream for many years had been to work for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), but being clueless on achieving this dream was a challenge. While Amnpreet was browsing online, she came across a Facebook post, stating that the BBC Asian Network were looking for an intern. She applied, a day before the deadline with a little hope of them glancing at her application. Fortunately, she succeeded with the application and started 8 weeks internship for the station. Amnpreet's began her BBC journey.

Speaking from a South London Studio, Ampreet kaur described the transitions she went through, shuttling herself from Bradford to London during her internship and freelancing before gaining a permanent role as an assistant producer and settling down in London.

Amnpreet role as an assistant producer involves putting shows together i.e  new features, guests, developing existing features, generating new ideas and content, guest expectation, being in control throughout the show and also making sure the presenter is well formed. Furthermore, she described her daily routine as looking at trending stories on social media and searching for new song for airtime also guest profiling i.e. personal and musical background. In the her video interview below, she mentioned shows she produces such as The BBC Asian Prom, Tommy Sandhu show and Bobby Friction show.
